I download a lot of music. Like an unhealthy amount. It makes my computers prone to viruses, and more importantly me susceptible to lawsuits from the RIAA.
The one thing I cannot stand is the 10 second shout out at the beginning of many songs I find. The artist, producer, beat maker, janitor or anyone remotely involved in the song decides to announce themselves to the world. Which brings up the question: Why?
One of my FAVORITE songs: This Plane by Wiz Khalifa has a “hey go buy my album” blip mid song from Wiz himself.
I’m far from an expert; but I like to think that Marketing, Branding and Communication in general is something I’m fairly proficient at; and this just makes no sense. Do you really think interrupting the song makes people want to learn more about your or your website?
Essentially your putting a commercial in the middle of your song. And as we all know, commercials suck. They rarely reach their target audience, never give a good ROI, and are more often than not ignored or skipped via Tivo.
Cee-Lo Green, of Gnarls Barkley fame, just released this song a few days ago. Usually angry songs, esepcially those titled Fuck You (Dr. Dre, Ludacris, Lil Wayne), are full of hardcore beats, angry lyrics, and are far from upbeat.
Cee-Lo’s song takes a complete 180 to the notions above.
